Beyond Belly Dancing
Shakira already puts on a better concert show than Lady Gaga or Madonna
J-Lo? Hell no!
The fact that Colombian beauty Shakira is not the biggest female Latin crossover star currently gracing the stage has been somewhat of a head scratcher to me for nearly a decade.
She's beautiful and talented singer, songwriter, producer and belly dancer who also strums a little guitar and manages to churn out the multi-platinum album — like last year's She-Wolf and the upcoming Sale El Sol — every couple of years.
With her snake dancing and mix of Latin-meets-Middle-East music, Shakira has become the most original artists on the planet. Past hits like "Whenever, Wherever" and "Hips Don't Lie" blend a sense of cultural flair with pop music mass appeal with an ease that most artists search for in the studio and never find.
I went to a Shakira concert a few years ago and was completely blown away. It was tighter and more musical than a Lady Gaga show and more diverse and dynamic than the showcase productions by Madonna. (That's right. I said it.)
Eventually Shakira-mania is going to lock in and her tickets will be in insanely high-demand. That's all the more reason to get a good seat for this show now.
8 p.m. Friday at Toyota Center
Tickets: $9.50-$149.50
