Houston gets its own Voodoo Fest: Introducing GhoulsFest — a spooky, indie musicparty
Houston's indie music scene has now got an answer to New Orleans' revered Voodoo Fest. GhoulsFest, which will be a one-day Oct. 30 event, promises to make for a very hipster Halloween season, featuring headliner Bad Brains and heavyweights We Are Scientists and Fischerspooner.
Los Angeles-imports Peanut Butter Wolf and singer/songwriter/artist Daniel Johnston are also in the mix of acts.
We Are Scientists will be performing their just-dropped album, Barbara, which features guitar-heavy songs with an increasingly slick production style. The lightness of "Rules Don't Stop" might diminish the ghoulish theme, but that's OK:

Rounding out the trendy tracks will be a Hot Chip DJ set — the band itself may be absent, but the set is rife with raucous remixes. Get into that group's interpretation of Amy Winehouse's "Rehab":

The one-day event at Tom Bass Park (which is south of Beltway 8) is largely drawing on local bands, like festival standards Spain Colored Orange, rapper Fat Tony, The Live Lights and Roky Moon and BOLT!. Houston's own Scale the Summit's instrumental sound strikes a chord with their pre-grunge, mood-metal vibes. Listen to that band's mastery of the bass on the track, "The Great Plains":

GhoulsFest will fill in the gap left by the defunct Free Press Westheimer Block Party and offer potentially pleasant weather in comparison to the scorching Summer Fest.
Yet the "early bird" price of $35 already has some hipsters spooked, asking if the festival is worth the drive to the OTB venue. That's more than the initial cost of the two-day SummerFest at Eleanor Tinsley Park, which also boasted an inarguably better lineup.
GhoulsFest tickets are on sale now.
