Painkillers & odd songs
Blame it on the medication: Rick Perry caught singing to the tune of "The Eyesof Texas" in campaign bathroom
A soon-to-be released e-book about the fight for the Republican presidential nomination confirms something that's been suspected all along: Texas Gov. Rick Perry popped painkillers before his erratic debate performances last fall and earlier this year.
"It became an open secret that he was using painkillers in sufficient dosages to keep him standing through the two-hour debates,” the authors of Inside the Circus write, according to The Daily Caller website, which obtained a copy.
The book, authored by Politico reporters Mike Allen and Evan Thomas, comes out Tuesday.
What's more surprising is their report that the pill-popping guv was merrily singing "I've Been Working on the Railroad" in the bathroom before an October debate in New Hampshire, according to a rival campaign manager. Isn't that also the same tune as "The Eyes of Texas are Upon You," the University of Texas fight song? Seems like an odd choice for a former yell leader at Texas A&M.
Blame it on the medication.
“Wondering who was making all the noise, the campaign manager turned his head and saw, to his surprise, the governor of Texas,” the book states. “Perry came down the row of about twenty urinals and stood companionably close by."
The campaign manager made a quick getway, the book states, as Perry continued singing.
