Entrepreneur land: Texas dominates Best Cities for Small Business rankings
We're weathering the recession like champs here in Texas, a phenomenon recognized in the Business Journals' annual On Numbers ranking of the "Best cities in America for small business."
Austin took the top spot for the fourth consecutive year on the 2013 list thanks to overall growth in small biz, employment and the general population.
The state capital averages 23.30 small businesses per 1,000 residents, private sector jobs have increased by 4.57 percent in the past year and the population has exploded by 17.7 percent in the past five years.
After Oklahoma City, Denver, Raleigh, Salt Lake City, Durham and Seattle, Houston ranks No. 8 on the list — down from the fourth spot in the 2012 rankings. Still, the Bayou City counts 19.91 small businesses per 1,000 residents and has seen a 3.81 percent private sector job growth in the past year.
