Surf's up! Houston reality star returns with a new Mark Cuban-approved workout
Reality TV bad boy Kalon McMahon has returned to his native Houston after more than a year of living in Manhattan Beach near Los Angeles — and he's brought a piece of the West Coast scene along with him.
The controversialBachelorette and Bachelor Pad alum will be launching Texas branches of Surfset Fitness, a company that's created a full-body exercise platform based on physical demands of surfing. Participants balance on modified surfboards for flexible workouts that burn fat, increase flexibility and sculpt the core.
"All these stoner surfer guys I know in California are in amazing shape and they never work out," McMahon tells CultureMap. "There's something about the muscles you use on a surfboard that gives you this look that's lean without being too muscular."

Alongside Surfset trainer and girlfriend Sam Kalil, McMahon has started his company's first sessions at Cypress' Trinity Pilates, which is owned by Kalil's sister and fellow Surfset instructor Ashley Smith. In just one short month, the former reality star has assembled roster of high-profile clients that includes Danielle Bradbury from NBC's The Voice as well as Houston Dynamo defender Mike Chabala.
McMahon and his team plan to open a dedicated studio inside the 610 Loop by December, just in time for the rush of New Year's resolutions.
Since 2012, Surfset has been making waves across the nation thanks to capital from mega-investor Mark Cuban, who purchased 30 percent of the company after founders Mike Hartwick and Sarah Ponn pitched the concept on ABC's Shark Tank. McMahon hopes to expand the company's presence in Houston before expanding to Dallas and then Austin.
"As much as I miss Los Angeles, it's great to be back," he says. "Plus, it's like we've brought a little piece of California to Texas."
In addition to his work with Surfset Texas — which has its official grand opening at Trinity Pilates on Saturday — McMahon has been putting his TV celebrity status to good use. On Saturday, he accompanied Texas geologist Morgan Ostroski on a private lunch and helicopter ride to the exclusive Dos Brisas resort, all part of a $5,000 Bachelor-style date he offered to benefit Houston nonprofit Citizens for Animal Protection.
