Score one for The Woodlands: Dallas Cowboys cheerleader celebration footballsnuggle brings the buzz home
The age-old quarterback and head cheerleader stereotype was turned upside down on Sunday in Dallas when the Cowboys played the Buffalo Bills. When Bills wide receiver (and native Texan) David Nelson scored, he ran a victory lap past the sidelines where his longtime girlfriend Kelsi Reich was cheering. . . for the other team.
The relationship was nothing new to anyone who has followed the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders blog. Reich, a fourth season cheerleader from The Woodlands who can hold Skittles in her dimples, wrote last year about conflicting emotions and loyalties to two teams after Nelson signed on with the Bills.
Last week, anticipation built as Nelson promised something special if he scored during the game. Was this a story of star-crossed lovers? Was it a moral dilemma?
The time came during the second quarter, but the game wasn't proceeding in Nelson's favor (the Bills were down by 14) so he kept it simple, sprinting down the field to celebrate with a hug and to give Reich the football as a souvenir. Nelson's touchdown was the only Bills score of the game, which the Cowboys won 44-7.
Although Reich's face initially registered discomfort (How was she supposed to hold that football, really, with pom poms in both hands?), the cheerleader later tweeted "I loved what David did, it meant the world to me! I don't need diamonds because I'm still carrying that ball everywhere! haha."
Some analysts are disgusted. Others contend that it was the cutest thing ever. For his part, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that he got a kick out of it. Jones told a radio station that, "It was as neat as a pin."
