Costumed competitors make Scrabble tournament a wild ride for literacy
What: Literacy Advance of Houston annual "Scrabble in the City" fundraiser.

The scoop: Party madness prevailed as wordsmiths, many in costumes, pitted their Scrabble skills against one another while sipping Saint Arnold's tasty brews and noshing on taste treats. "The Goya 8 Bean Salad" team (Peggi Stewart and Sarah and Scott Van Beck) took top honors. The "Scrabble Night Alive" contingent (Sarah Altemus, Diana and John Hoover and Marc Schroder) won for best team name. "The Playmates," loosely dressed as bunnies (Robin Dickehuth, Pat Guiterrez, Kathy Stockton and Jacqueline Yee) earned best team costume honors.
Among the more than 200 guests were Maria and Neil Bush, chairs of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, which matched funds resulting in a night's raise of $35,000 for adult literacy classes. Ellen Elam chaired and KPRC Channel 2's Khambrel Marshall served as emcee.
