Hans Graf, good wine, good food make for a memorable symphony dinner
It was an event organizer's happiest dream — the Houston Symphony Maestro's Wine Dinner on stage at Jones Hall was a sellout before the invitations were posted!
The symphony even went so far as to add two unplanned tables to the partyscape because corporate demand could not be turned down for a total 232 diners. Anyone who has attended the delicious Sunday night dinner knows the pleasures of bidding on truly fine wines and dining on superb fare from Jackson & Co., the wines paired for each course by Lindy and John Rydman. That duo of Spec's fame each year serves as dinner wine chairs.
Taking the reins as chairman of the evening were Carolyn and Mike Mann and Kathy and Paul Mann, applauded for their efforts that resulted in the benefit surpassing its goal for a total take of $189,725.
The hour-long reception that launched the evening featured a Russian theme — caviar, borscht, smoked sturgeon — in a nod to the symphony's concert of Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky music. And how about that new Ivanabitch (yes) vodka? The firm is donating a portion of their Texas sales to the symphony in gratitude to the Rydmans.
Once seated at beautifully-decorated tables on the Jones Hall stage, guests were welcomed by new CEO Mark Hanson and by maestro Hans Graf. It was the latter's pleasure to introduce the wines for the main course and cheese course and to introduce the first course — Leipziger Allerlei, a German dish prepared by Jackson Hicks' team according to Margarita Graf's personal recipe.
