Houston's new pickleball-themed sports bar swings into action this week
A sports bar and restaurant devoted to pickleball is ready to make its debut. PKL Social will open this Thursday, March 21.
First announced in 2022, PKL Social is a new project from the team behind FM Kitchen & Bar, the comfort food restaurant and patio bar that’s located near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Shepherd Drive. PKL Social is located next to, and shares a patio with, FM Kitchen (1112 Shepherd Dr.). Many of its menu items overlap with FM Kitchen’s (more on that below).
For those unfamiliar with the sport, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Played either one-on-one or two-on-two, the smaller, badminton-sized court makes it relatively easy to learn and promotes social interaction between the players.
Open daily for lunch, dinner, and late-night, PKL Social has four pickleball courts that patrons can reserve online for $30 per hour. Those looking for a more informal experience may opt for $10 open play sessions on weekdays from 11 am - 1 pm and 1-3 pm.
Beginning in April, PKL Social will host Friday night pick-up games so that anyone can play for a little while. In addition, it plans to host learn-to-play events on the first Sunday of every month. An on-site pro shop will offer equipment either for rental or for purchase as well as gear, apparel, and more.
To be clear, PKL Social is as much a sports bar as it is a place to play pickleball. A covered, dog-friendly patio features more than 20 TVs and a 130-inch video wall — just in time for March Madness and the start of baseball season — as well as games such as corn hole and ping pong.
Many of FM Kitchen’s most popular menu items are also available at PKL Social, including burgers, salads, and sandwiches. The restaurant’s chefs have created a few unique items that include soft pretzels, garlic-parm-ranch wings, and a coconut shrimp bowl. Pair them with sips that include a frozen paloma and other cocktails, beers such as the PKL Light Lager (brewed by Saint Arnold), seltzers, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages.
“Pickleball has seen an incredible surge in popularity over the past few years, and we're thrilled to bring this dynamic and accessible sport to Houstonians in our own vibrant and social way" PKL Social operating partner Jason Mok said in a statement. “As the name implies, we’ve worked diligently to ensure we have developed both a top-notch pickleball venue and curated the laid-back atmosphere of your go-to hangout spot.”
