Status seekers alert: Apple and Hermès offer smartwatch online for the first time
With much fanfare Apple teamed with Hermès last fall for a special luxury edition of its new smartwatch, but only offered it at stores in five North American cities (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Toronto) — none in Texas.
Starting Friday (January 22), it will get easier to buy the exclusive watch as it will be offered on each brand's website — Hermes.com and Apple.com.
The watch, which goes by the somewhat clunky name of Apple Watch Hermès, features the addition of an Hermès logo to the face of the Apple watch, and three options — including the "Single Tour" with a hand-stitched leather strap (starting at $1,100); the “Double Tour,” which wraps twice around the wrist ($1,250); and the “Cuff,” which Apple notes is “inspired by equestrian fixtures" ($1,500).
Pricey, for sure, but cheaper than Apple's own Watch Edition style, in rose gold or 18-karat gold, which ranges from $10,000 to $12,000.
Trendy lifestyle magazine Wallpaper* has taken note, naming the Apple Watch Hermès as 2015’s “Life Enhancer of the Year” in its annual design awards. A panel that included architect David Adjaye, legendary ad executive George Lois and Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne picked the winners who will be highlighted in the February 2016 issue.
