Late night smash-and-grab leaves bicycle shop with one less sweet ride
A popular Montrose bicycle shop became a crime scene early Thursday morning thanks to a late night smash-and-grab.
The Bici Cyclery on Dunlavy at Fairview remains open while owner Michael Dihn and his staff clean up a broken front window and assess the losses. So far, it appears the thief took only a high-end bike.
"I guess stuff like this just comes with the territory. We have a lot of cool, shiny new things and I suppose someone got tempted."
"There's literally glass everywhere," Dihn tells CultureMap. "Luckily, we didn't get totally cleared out. We think someone was casing out the place, because the person went straight for the expensive stuff."
The store carries some of the biggest names in quality bicycles, like Linus, State, Cinelli and Brooklyn Cruiser. Fully-assembled bikes run upwards of several thousands dollars.
Dihn awoke to a call from police around 3 a.m. and rushed to the shop. A handful of neighbors heard the alarm and came outside only to spot a person fleeing the scene on a rather pricey ride.
"I guess stuff like this just comes with the territory. We have a lot of cool, shiny new things and I suppose someone got tempted," the owner says, noting that he will be reviewing the store's surveillance videos.
The Houston Police Department says that the case is under investigation. Those with any information are asked to call the HPD burglary division at 713-308-0900.
