Gunning for Gunnison
Continental gets ski happy, makes tiny Colorado airport major
Jul 8, 2010 | 12:59 pm
Continental (United? whatever) will begin daily service to the Gunnison-Crested Butte, Colo., airport on Dec. 16.
The tiny airport (two gates and one baggage carousel kind of tiny) is 220 miles from Denver (the closest major airport), and the area is known for its skiing and snowboarding. It's become something of a mecca for Houstonians (Crested Butte Mountain Resort's sales and market VP said that the Bayou City is the most requested city for added air service). The wintertime service will run through April 3, 2011.
I'm all for it — if they can get the planes of the ground. Hurricane season has been bad enough for Continental's timeliness; I don't even want to know what kind of "weather" they'll encounter in Gunnison.
