How will Chinese fans react?
Yao Ming and wife are new parents of an All-American girl
Yao Ming and his wife, Ye Li, are proud parents of an All-American girl.
Ye gave birth to the 7-pound, 9-ounce baby Friday afternoon at an unnamed Houston hospital. "I am very excited about the arrival of our daughter," Yao said in a statement. "This is a very special moment in our lives and we thank everyone for their kindness and support."
The couple, who married in 2007, did not announce a name for the new baby. Both mother and daughter are doing fine.
As CultureMap reported in March, Yao and Ye generated a furor in China after the couple opted to return to the United States for the baby's birth. They had been spending several months in China as he recovered from a broken foot that forced him to miss the entire NBA season.
Online sites for Chinese basketball fans called the move, a potential "betrayal" - with the worry being that the Chinese National Team could be deprived of a future basketball superstar if Baby Yao ended up with a U.S. birth certificate. China does not recognize dual citzenships like many other countries do.
