Final Four Frenzy
MetroRail gives Final Four fans free rides; Houston's early bar closures drawgroans
It was a 15-minute wait for the MetroRail Saturday night after the Kentucky-Connecticut game ended as fans shuffled through tented lines and were boarded in groups by officials. For disappointed and celebratory spectators alike it was just another delay in the mad rush to Houston bars.
Having gone to college in a town where bars closed at 1 a.m., I was baffled, but fans from UK and Butler (where last call is 2:30 and 3 a.m., respectively) couldn't fathom having little more than an hour to drown their sorrows or toast fellow fans.
Metro operated later rail hours than normal to accommodate the throngs, and gamely let boarders know they wouldn't be checking tickets. It was free transport for all in Houston, where travelers also noted how well-kept our rail system is. (We didn't tell them it was because it's rarely used for anything but sporting events and Med-center residents).
We expect Monday to be far less crowded as Kentucky fans disperse, and we guess UConn's Houston contingent could fit into one rail car.
