Spring Fever
Peek inside lovely homes and secret gardens this weekend: The best in home andgarden tours
With several home and garden tours on the schedule, the first official weekend of spring affords a number of occasions to get out of your own house and step into the residences — and backyards — of others.
The weather will be nice, so why not take a stroll around the block, stop in on these homes and give money to good causes?
The Garden Conservancy Open Days Program
The Houston Open Days Program grants direct access to six gardens tucked away in Houston's inner-Loop neighborhoods this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
An overall admission tag of $25 (it's $5 for each garden individually) grants entrance to a small urban garden in the Heights, a terraced bayou-front expanse, an intimate retreat alongside a Montrose bungalow, a backyard of mature boxwoods in Broadacres and more.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at Buchanan's Native Plants, the Garden Gate and either Cornelius Nursery location, or on-site at the lead gardens at 831 Cortland Street and 1405 South Boulevard on the day of the tour. A portion of proceeds will be shared with Peckerwood Garden in Hempstead.
Southampton/Museum District Spring Home and Garden Tour
Always wanted to peer inside of some of those gorgeous residences in one of Houston's nicest neighborhoods? The second annual Southampton/Museum District Spring Home and Garden Tour affords you the chance this Sunday, from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.
From a revamped 1920s home to a newly-constructed manse in the Spanish/Mediterranean style, each of the six stops on the self-directed tour is an architectural sight to behold. Inside, visitors can expect to see impressive art collections, beautiful gardens and elegant antique furnishings.
"These homeowners are graciously willing to open up their homes for the benefit of the Friends of the Southampton Esplanade," group chairman Cathy Blum said. She will act as a docent along with representatives from area real estate agencies.
The event is sponsored by Greenwood King Properties, along with Carl Moore Antiques, Kuhl-Linscomb, M. Naeve Antiques and Thompson & Hanson. All of the proceeds will go to replace and upkeep the landscaping along the Southampton Esplanade. Tickets will be available for $25 (cash or personal check accepted) at each of the stops along the route.
