10 surprising Star Wars Day facts: From the tea party tie to future hot messEmma Watson
Caught yourself beside the water cooler at a loss for words as the IT guys gush about Star Wars Day? Personally, I had no idea that Star Wars was not a sequel to Star Trek, or that "Skywalker" is anything more than a strain of marijuana.
Let alone that May 4 is Star Wars Day because it makes that "catchy" May the Fourth Be With You phrase.
Turns out, there is a lot of knowledge to brush up on. Here's a crash course in everything Star Wars to get you through the insider galaxy conversations — and maybe into a diehard fan's Darth Vader lair.
1. Star Wars' plot supposedly takes place in a fictional galaxy at some indistinguishable point in the past. In reality, the original movies were filmed between 1977 and 1983 in a Century City studio.
2. R2-D2 was once on Sesame Street. During that episode, he fell madly in love with a fire hydrant.
3. "The Dark Side" is not a racial slur or sex position, but a conceptual state of mind on par with the tea party.
4. "Chewbacca" and "Yoda" are actually part of the scientific names of different species of wasps. Not like white people who don't talk about their feelings, but the insects.
5. I hate to give anything away, but Darth Vader is Luke's daddy.
6. Boba Fett's preferred fashion flair is a Wookie scalp.
7. The Star Wars trilogy is the third-highest-grossing movie series after James Bond and Harry Potter. Relatedly, let's hope that Emma Watson turns out as fabulous of a hot mess as Carrie Fisher.
8. Princess Leia's hair was inspired by the form of a honey bun. (Note: this fact is not yet confirmed).
9. Star Wars is indeed different from Star Trek, although both works take place in a galaxy relatively far, far away.
10. The entire Star Wars saga will be released on Blu-Ray on Sept. 16. I have no idea what Blu-Ray is, but it sounds fancy and worth spending a lot of money on.
