Big Dance pieces: Sublime with Rome to highlight free Final Four concert; PatGreen gets a spot too
After making a play at mega acts like Jay-Z — and finding that the logistics didn't work for both sides — organizers of The Big Dance Concert Series have turned to Sublime with Rome to headline the free April 1 concert at Discovery Green Final Four weekend. A source tells CultureMap that Jay-Z and other crossover superstar acts were contacted, but in the end Sublime with Rome turned out to be the best fit.
CultureMap has also learned that Texas favorite Pat Green will perform during the Sunday show headlined by country music superstar Kenny Chesney.
Sublime with Rome will highlight a Friday night show that will include other acts (as all three Big Dance Concert Series nights will).
Kings of Leon was announced as the Saturday night (April 2) headliner weeks ago and recently CultureMap broke the news that Chesney will headline the Sunday night (April 3) show Final Four weekend.
Now add in Sublime with Rome, the group that consists of two original members of Sublime (Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh) and singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez. Sublime's original leader singer Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996 and his estate sued to stop the new trio from calling themselves simply Sublime.
Sublime with Rome might not seem to fit in with the stop-and-make-you-notice starpower of Kings of Leon and Chesney at first glance, but the group is about to go on a major tour, starting with a Lollapalooza concert in Santiago, Chile on April 3. The ska-punk band Sublime was known for wild shows and this incarnation is trying to build that type of performance buzz. Now, it has the Final Four stage to do it.
Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Greg Ortale tells CultureMap that the city expects 25,000 people, "if not more," to attend each session of the Big Dance Concert Series and be packed around Discovery Green and the surrounding streets.
"We'll be ready for it." Ortale says. "We had something of a test run on New Year's Eve ( with Gloworama) and I think everyone would agree how first class that went off. It's going to be a great three days of concerts for Houston."
