Houston Police Department goes retro: Now about those Crown Victorias . . .
Black and white is a hit for HPD's new fleet.
The Houston Police Department is going retro. Its patrol cars are changing from their current blue and white color scheme to a more traditional black and white look.
Along with the new paint jobs, there will be new car models that will add to the revamping of the department. Ford is no longer manufacturing the Crown Victoria, which the HPD uses for patrol cars so they needed to change things up and decided to switch the color scheme at the same time.
Some of the vehicles that are in the process of being tested for the job include the Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Caprice, Chevrolet Tahoe and the Ford Interceptor. Within the next couple of years, the entire fleet of more than 1,500 HPD vehicles will have the new black and white color scheme — whatever their model.
During the transition process, some of blue and white patrol cars will still be in use. The new paint jobs are being paid for by forfeiture assets, so don't worry taxpayers.
