Jazz Houston’s Artistic Director, Vincent Gardner, will host the Essentially Ellington Jazz Band Regional Festival. The festival will include clinics, master classes, jam sessions, a music and financial literacy seminar to provide information to students for their professional careers; Band Directors & Essentially Ellington Clinicians’ Luncheon; an Awards Ceremony for the students competing in Outstanding Solo and Section Playing.
Topping the evening off will be a concert featuring special guest saxophonist Walter Blanding (formerly with Wynton Marsalis), trombonist Vincent Gardner (lead trombonist with Wynton Marsalis and Artistic/Education Director of Jazz Houston); Rodney Whitaker (Director of Jazz Studies, Michigan State, former bassist with Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove); Brian Perez (Director of Jazz Studies, TSU); and the Texas Southern University Jazz Ensemble.
Students from the following high schools are participating: James Bowie, Southlake Carroll, Del Rio, Kinder HSPVA, Lamar, Magnolia, Plano West, Temple, and Waltrip.
