Houston Chamber Choir presents Mass for the Endangered

Houston Chamber Choir presents Mass for the Endangered

The Houston Chamber Choir joins the new instrumental group Loop38 in the regional premiere of Mass for the Endangered by young American composer Sara Kirkland-Snider. A celebration, and an elegy, for the natural world, this extraordinary work is an appeal for greater awareness, urgency, and action. At once jubilant and reverent, Mass for the Endangered is a meditation on all that nature has to offer and what they can offer in return.

Performing Arts Houston presents Dance Theatre of Harlem

Performing Arts Houston presents Dance Theatre of Harlem

Now a singular presence in the ballet world, celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company tours nationally and internationally, presenting a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 17-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate African American culture. Through performances, community engagement and arts education, the company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all.

"The Decisions We Make," Lindy Chambers

Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts presents “Hidden Beauty in the Ordinary” opening day

“Hidden Beauty in the Ordinary” will be featured in the Cole Gallery, with a dozen works by artist Lindy Chambers. Chambers paints rural scenes of life in the Texas countryside where she lives. By simply paying attention, she observes often overlooked aspects of life to discover beauty in mobile homes, stray dogs, and piles of trash.

Her paintings are vibrant compositions of color that never use the same hue twice. Her insistence on variety furthers the idea that everything contains its own unique beauty, if you only stop to notice.

The exhibition will remain on display through May 13.

"Navajo Moon," Mark Burns

Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts presents “America’s Western Landscape” opening day

“America’s Western Landscape,” is a new exhibition by photographer Mark Burns that will make its debut at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts.

The exhibit celebrates the raw beauty, vistas, and natural diversity of the American West. In many ways it represents the “best of the best” of Burns’ landscape work, with 50 pieces selected by the artist including black and white photographs, color photographs, and hand-colorized black and white photographs.

“America’s Western Landscape” will be featured in the Main Gallery of the Pearl and includes an optional audio guide accessible by smartphones.

The exhibition will be on display through May 13.

Beyoncé adds second Houston date to highly anticipated world tour due to massive surge in ticket demand

back-to-back bey

Houston Beyoncé fans, rejoice: Queen Bey has added another show to her just-announced Renaissance World Tour.

As CultureMap previously reported, Beyoncé is returning to her hometown in a show originally planned for September 23 at NRG Stadium. Now, due to surge in ticket demand, a second show at NRG has been added for the following day on September 24.

This comes as tour organizers have added seven new dates to the North American leg of the tour, based on Beyhive buzz.

According to LiveNation, fan demand for Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour now exceeds the number of available tickets by more than 800 percent, based on current registration numbers in the Group A cities.

Even with these added dates, LiveNation expects a majority of interested fans "will not be able to get tickets because demand drastically exceeds supply," per a press announcement.

Beyhive fans who miss the second Houston show can try to catch Bey in Dallas two days prior to the Houston show, where she'll play AT&T Stadium on September 21.

Ticketing for the world tour dates go on sale Monday, February 6. BeyHive members will enjoy an exclusive presale, while other fans can register now with Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan technology here. Those interested can score tickets, schedules, and more information at beyonce.livenation.com and tour.beyonce.com.

Note to jet-setting Houstonians: The queen kicks off her world tour on May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden at the Friends Arena. She'll dot Europe with big stadium shows through June 27, where she'll play Warsaw, Poland.

Her North American tour starts July 8 in Canada, where she'll play Toronto's Rogers Centre. Beyoncé will trek the U.S. through the summer and into September; her Dallas and Houston shows are the sole Texas performances.

In a bit of a head scratcher, the Houston native will end her tour in New Orleans (Caesars Superdome) on September 27.

The world tour comes as Beyoncé is awash in Grammy glow: in November, she was nominated for nine Grammy Awards, tying her with her husband (neé Shawn Corey Carter) for the most nominations in Grammy history. Critics and fans have lauded Renaissance, her first solo work since the wildly popular and deeply personal 2016 effort, Lemonade — even through its minor controversy.

Love is in the air in League City during your February getaway

Couples Trip

Valentine's Day provides the perfect excuse for a romantic getaway, and you don't have to travel far for those vacation vibes.

League City is just 30 miles southeast of Houston and sits on Clear Lake — the country's third-largest boating destination — providing miles of waterfront dining, entertainment, and activities.

Plan a February escape with these itinerary ideas:

Wine and romance
Spend Valentine’s Day day or the whole weekend at South Shore Harbour Resort, known for its elegant design, chic marina-style pool, and proximity to South Shore Harbour Marina on Clear Lake.

Make sure you visit extends through February 16 when the resort is hosting its monthly wine dinner, this time themed around romance and featuring pours from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. The four-course feast will feature four wine pairings plus live entertainment. For reservations, contact 281-334-1000, ext. 2022, or email nmatthews@sshr.com.

Waterfront dining
Speaking of date-night meals: Take advantage of Clear Lake's shores and the eateries that serve up views with their entrees by bookmarking this list of waterfront restaurants.

You spot Opus Bistro & Steakhouse, which sits just above the pool at South Shore Harbour Resort and overlooks the marina. Sample plates of lobster risotto, chicken fried veal, or Cajun shrimp and grits in an elegant setting.

Also on the list is Sundance Grille II, nestled among the sailboats and trees in Waterford Harbor Marina and accessible by car or boat. Dine on seafood such as crab cakes topped with choron sauce or shrimp Bimini. On Sundays, nurse a mimosa or two and enjoy their well-loved champagne brunch from 10 am-3 pm.

Other great date night options include Main Street Bistro in the Historic District, Craft 96 for craft beer fans, and Red River BBQ and Red River Cantina.

Love by the pound
A sweet tooth can't be confined to dessert, so start your day by sharing the famous 5 lb. cinnamon roll at Bonnie's Donuts.

This epic breakfast does require 24-hour notice to be made, and if any of the other artfully decorated, colorfully customized creations catch your eye for V-Day, make sure to order with at least two day's notice.

Relax and rejuvenate
Feeling the need to take it easy after all that delicious food? League City's got you covered with these suggestions.

Charter a sunset cruise to enjoy not only beautiful views, but also possibly spot some frolicking dolphins.

Explore local boutiques stocked with one-of-a-kind finds. The number – 24! – of local shops on Main Street and League City’s Historic District are surprising and offer a delightful way to spend the day. Plan your perfect shopping trip with this guide.

Say "aaaah" with a couples massage or equally pampering treatment like a facial or body wrap at a variety of area spas.

Say "I do"
Of course, the most memorable way to express your love in League City is by getting married — elopement-style.

The picture-perfect wedding venue Butler's Courtyard has brought back its Valentine's Day Elopement Extravaganza, where for only $150 couples will receive a wedding ceremony, licensed wedding officiant, professional wedding photographer, and a personal wedding cake to-go, all in 15 minutes.
