Ernie's on Banks reopens with a new name: Grand Prize Bar

After its unexpected overnight closure a few weeks ago, like a friggin' Phoenix from the ashes, Ernie's on Banks has risen again under the name Grand Prize Bar.

Owner Brad Moore tells CultureMap the name comes from an award-winning beer brewed here in Houston in the 1950s by a company called Gulf Brewery, which was owned by our own resident eccentric, Howard Hughes.

And another thing! The rumor about Big Star Bar opening a second location in Montrose is just that — rumor. Moore's only new Montrose spot is Grand Prize. BSB will remain as is in the Heights.
