From Frozen to Die Hard, these 9 December shows are must-sees in Houston

    Tarra Gaines
    Dec 6, 2024 | 11:30 am

We’re still making our way through our traditional holiday stage viewing that opened last month, including those dancing Nutcrackers and spooky Christmastime ghosts. Yet, December brings even more theatrical treats. We’ve got fairytale fun for the whole family with a brand-new Frozen and Pinocchio. Cabaret companies ring in the holidays, and Sister is back for a Catechism mystery. And for those wanting to leave the kids at home, Houston theater even has a few shows likely on Santa’s naughty-list.

    Holiday Cabaret (now through December)
If you’re in the mood for some great songs, light comedy, and perhaps some performers to audience banter, Houston musical theater has some special cabaret shows for you. Music Box Theatre brings back A Beatles Holiday Cabaret, their annual December unique mashup tradition of mixing classic and contemporary holiday songs with Beatles standards. After last year’s success, Paul Hope Cabarets returns with several evenings of holiday songs both familiar and new that feature two favorite Yuletide themes, Angels and Bells. And as part of their Artists Lounge series, A.D. Players will present Merry Christmas Darling, as Chicago’s favorite leading lady Heidi Kettering sings the holiday hits of Karen Carpenter.

Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of Magi’s Gold at Stages (December 3-22)
After picking up summer school and regular term classes already this season, Houston's hardest working theatrical nun is back for the holidays with another catechism session. In this special Christmas rendition, Sister (Stages favorite Denise Fennell) plays detective as she tries to solve the mystery of what happened to all that gifted gold those the wise men brought to the most famous baby shower in history. While Sister recounts the nativity story in her own unique way, no texting or gum chewing is allowed in this class. Pay attention because Sister will call on her students and sometimes require active participation.

The Night Shift Before Christmas at Alley Theatre (December 5-29)
The Alley brings back this crowd-pleasing tale that they world-premiered in 2022 with a name change and a brand new script. Scrooge gets a decidedly 21st century, Tejana new look in this one-woman show from playwright Isaac Gómez. Working the Christmas Eve night shift at an iconic Texas burger joint, Margot is about to find out the usual grumpy drive-thru customers and an equally grumpy robotic Santa are the least of her worries when her dead friend Jackie Marley stops by with a gaggle of ghostly customers. Briana J. Resa, who originated the role of Margo, is also back to let the spirits sometimes literally move her.

Panto Pinocchio at Stages (December 6-January 5)
Stages’ takes us on another holiday adventure as they continue their annual tradition of bringing world premiere panto shows that weave together contemporary fairytale revision with some adult satire and silly fun for kids. In this 21st century version of Pinocchio, the kid that just wants to be real begins life as an AI boy created by genius inventor Gill Bates. With the help of everybody’s favorite faithful guide, Buttons, Pinocchio embarks on a quest to become real and encounters a world of digital mischief and adventure along the way. Will he unlock the secrets to his identity? Or will the conniving villains Miss Treats and Miss Demeanor disrupt the festivities and thwart Pinocchio’s journey?

Disney’s Frozen from Theatre Under the Stars (December 10-29)
Let it go – the holiday stresses that is – and spend a night in the winter wonderland of the fairytale Frozen. The stage musical of Disney’s blockbuster animated film took Broadway by (snow) storm seven years ago before hitting the road for a multi-year U.S tour. Now that those tours have ended, Disney invited Theatre Under the Stars to create its own production.

While all the beloved songs and the story of a queendom saved by magic and sisterly love will remain the same, look for all-new set and costume designs inspired by Scandinavia. This will likely be TUTS' biggest self-produced show of the year and will include students from their theater schools, making it perfect for the whole family.

Who's Holiday! from Garden Theatre (December 13-22)
If you’re looking for a show that’s decidedly adults-only, head down to the MATCH for this irreverent parody about the aftermath of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Cindy Lou Who, the adorable tike who saved Christmas from the Grinch, has reached adulthood, lives in a trailer on Mount Crumpit, and boy has she seen some Seussicial stuff in her time. Local fav Chaney Moore, who has appeared on many a Houston stage, plays the bawdy, outrageous Cindy Lou as she prepares to host a tell-all Christmas party.

“She’s got a martini in one hand, a cigarette in the other, and she’s ready to finally tell you her side of the story,” explains Garden Theatre artistic director Logan Vaden.

Yippee Ki Yay presented by Performing Arts Houston (December 20-22)
As the year winds down, let’s move beyond the debate about whether Die Hard is actually a Christmas movie and focus on the much more important new argument: Does a one-man, live-rhyming reenactment of Die Hard count as a holiday show? We’ll find out as PAH stages this internationally award-winning, action-packed, loving (but still weird) comic tribute to Die Hard. Be there live as John McClane and Han Gruber (a.k.a writer/performer Richard March) set Nakatomi Plaza ablaze through the magic of theater lighting and imagination, while March also tells us a deeper story about the joy of being a fan.

Silver Party, the VIP lounge designed by Gin Braverman.

The second installment of the Untitled Art Fair opened to quite the fanfare on Thursday, October 1. VIP guests and members of the press looked on as Houston Mayor John Whitmire sliced through the ceremonial ribbon, allowing eager contemporary art enthusiasts to be the first to see what the show has in store over the weekend.

For anyone unfamiliar, Untitled Art serves as a curatorial platform for discovering contemporary art, spotlighting both emerging and established voices. Exhibitors are selected based on the strength of their programs and artistic vision, under the leadership of founder Jeffrey Lawson, executive director Clara Andrade, and Houston director Michael Slenske. This year, 98 galleries from over 20 countries and territories are participating.

This year, Untitled Art offers hourly guided tours organized by advisory partner The Agency Art House. These intimate tours offer an insider’s perspective on key highlights, providing context, market insights, and acquisition strategies. Tours will be held hourly and can be booked in Booth A3.

In addition, a podcast lounge where the audience can be seated to watch the Untitled Art Fair podcast sessions live has been carved out in an intimate corner of the show. Presented in partnership with Soho House Cities Without Houses, the Podcast Lounge will feature 28 panelists across seven discussions. This year’s program includes artists, collectors, curators, writers, institutional leaders, gallerists, and voices from the hospitality industry.

Untitled tapped Houston-based hospitality designer Gin Braverman of the acclaimed Gin Design Group (Kirkwood, ChòpnBlọk, etc.) to design what have become “Public Lounge” and “Silver Party,” the Andy Warhol-inspired VIP lounge. In Public Lounge, Braverman conceived a gathering place anchored by a large-scale overhead installation — a visual marker within the fair’s landscape of tall partition walls.

Braverman enlisted Rachel Hayes — textile artist and collaborator to brands such as Armani and Missoni, as well as musical acts Bon Iver and Olivia Rodrigo — to develop the artistic direction for the piece, resulting in True North, a new site-specific textile installation created specifically for Untitled Art Houston. The lounge is designed around the work, with its color and textile language extending into the space below, even the tablecloths have received the colorful Hayes treatment.

“We knew pretty quickly that the lounge needed something with real scale. You’re surrounded by these tall white walls, and I wanted something overhead that would pull your eye up and give you a sense of where you were,” explains Braverman. “I’ve always loved Rachel’s work and the way it lives somewhere between art, architecture, craft, and fashion, so she immediately came to mind. We gave her the form and let her run with it. Then True North became our north star for everything happening underneath it—the color, the textiles, the way people move through the space. I love that you can sit under this enormous piece of art and actually live with it for a minute.”

Hayes was immediately intrigued when approached for the commission. While the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based artist is no stranger to public art installations, the opportunity to weave her way into the hospitality realm seemed like a fresh and inspiring new avenue.

“I’ve never done anything quite like this before. It’s fun to try something new and to have someone to try it with because it makes it a little less scary,” says Hayes. “These are my people — this art audience and art crowd — so I was really excited to get asked to do this. As someone who works on a lot of public art projects, the audience isn’t necessarily art-goers. I like that my work can ride the line between design, art, fashion, public art, and architecture.”

Standing 16-feet-tall and spanning 10 feet in diameter, True North is a cylindrical textile installation composed of machine-sewn synthetic organza, nylon, lamé, and thread, including elements repurposed from Hayes’ previous works — every seam sewn by Hayes. The work draws on references ranging from grain silos and chandeliers to Mondrian’s grids and the pieced logic of quilts. On-site, Houston-based artist Matt Freis assisted Hayes with installation armature and lighting.

Raised high above the show floor, True North can be anything the viewer desires it to be. Much like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a patchwork of translucent planes of color, intersecting seams, and shifting layers create a monumental volume that moves between art, design, architecture, and placemaking.

“Something like this is a very contained form. The space is big enough that we could think big, but not have it be a total explosion or takeover of my art,” explains Hayes. “The fair is not about me. This is just one little moment in some breathing space and it’s cool to be a part of Gin’s world that she’s building. I’m really excited to see what people think. In textiles, different people bring different things to the table. It might remind them of quilts, or glass vessels, or sculptures — it’s fun to try something like that in fabric.”

    CultureMap Show Stoppers:

Gallery: TERN Gallery | Nassau, BS
    Artist: Richard Nattoo

Gallery: McClain Gallery | Houston, TX
    Artist: Pablo Picasso
    Price: Price upon request
    Location: A1
CultureMap’s Take: Perhaps an obvious choice, there is always something magical about a slightly unhinged 1950s era Picasso in crayon, graphite, and ink on paper.

    Gallery: Silver Party VIP Lounge
    Artist: Maripol
    Price: Not for sale
CultureMap’s Take: While not available to view by all Untitled ticket holders, the six Maripol works on display in Silver Party are quite incredible. Shot on an SX70 and printed on Canson satin paper, this collection of mostly selfies shot between 1977 and 1981 really are something to see.

Check out Untitled Art Fair from Friday, October 2—Sunday, October 4 in Hall A3 at George R. Brown Convention Center.
