Everyone complains there's no real history in Houston. But visit Hamilton Shirts and you're likely to change your mind. Still owned by the family that started the business in 1883, Hamilton specializes in bespoke and made-to-measure shirts of the highest quality. In an off-the-rack world, that's really special. Hand cut from double-ply Italian and Swiss fabrics, the shirts are made by trained specialists who have been with the company for years. You can watch them work through a picture window and marvel at their artistry. Shirts made with such care and detail are investments, but you're worth it. (An added bonus: 10 percent of profits are donated to charity.)
In addition to bespoke and made-to-measure shirts, the Hamilton showroom carries the entire ready-to-wear Hamilton 1883 collection. Just like the custom ones, these shirts are made on-site, but they're available in standard sizes and are a bit more affordable.
Hamilton may have started small, but their bespoke shirts can now be ordered at Barneys flagships throughout the country. The company has also developed quite a following as of late, and counts influental menswear bloggers and Hollywood celebrities, including Daniel Radcliffe, as part of their impressive client list. But the folks at Hamilton haven't forgotten about their roots: one of the store's wall serves as a museum of Houston history, dotted with photographs and articles about the shirtmaker's influence in Houston.
