Texas Medical Center
The hospital is usually to be avoided. But if you've got to go, you're lucky to be here in Houston.
The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world with 47 member institutions, including 13 hospitals and two medical schools. Around 5 million patients visit each year to receive care from some of the most renowned cancer, heart and pediatric specialists in the world, with more than $1 billion spent annually on research. It takes up more than 1,000 acres—approximately the size of inner-loop Chicago—which is no surprise to anyone who's gotten lost inside in the maze of mini-streets.
The Texas Medical Center comprises 19 academic institutions, 13 hospitals and 15 support services organizations, employing more than 72,000 people and with an estimated annual regional economic impact of $14 billion.
