Pennybacker Bridge

One of the loveliest drives any time of year in Austin happens on the Capital of Texas/360 Highway as you cross over Lake Austin (really the Colorado River). The rust-colored curved steel bridge — named officially for the architect, Percy V. Pennyback — is an architectural wonder in itself, stretching 1,150 feet across the lake without ever touching it. This keeps the lake clear for boaters and water skiers who love this hill-covered stretch of West Austin as much as the commuters who travel across it everyday on their way to work.

The bridge is four lanes wide in addition to a six foot wide pedestrian and biking lane, and a southbound turnaround that allows for parking below the bridge. Sunsets are especially phenomenal as you cross over the bridge because you can take in the huge expanse of sky in all directions.
