Main Street Theater
First things first: Main Street Theater is not on Main Street—not anywhere close to Main Street, as it happens. Instead, it’s located in what was once an abandoned dry cleaning plant in Rice Village with a second location at Chelsea Market on Montrose. The 92-seat space in Rice Village brings an intimate and visceral feeling to the productions with little to separate actors and audience. If an actor has a single tear falling down his cheek . . . you’ll see it. The second space is dedicated to youth theater programs and getting kids more engaged with the immediacy of live performances than with the programs they download onto their computers. Productions for adults run the gamut from cutting-edge to classics.
Main Street Theater, at the risk of losing their lease, has launched a capital campaign to buy and renovate their Rice Village building, creating a permanent home at last.
