The Core Artist-in-Residence Program at Glassell (the educational arm of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston ) has been instrumental in attracting major artists-in-the-making to Houston and then keeping them here to contribute to the city’s hip art scene. The Core program is a postgraduate fellowship extended to eight artists on the experimental edge, providing them with free studios and a stipend as they transition from their formal art-school training to professional careers. And over the years, many of them have fallen in love with Houston and dumped plans to move to New York, Paris, Chicago or L.A. upon graduation and put down roots right here. For the rest of us, there are nearly 100 art classes and workshops for both adults and children, rotating art exhibitions, public lectures by art luminaries and occasionally a big art sale that is never to be missed because the prices are right, and the selection of works is always cool.
