Whether it’s the rollicking musical Ain't Misbehavin’ or the poignant drama A Raisin In The Sun, The Ensemble Theater produces six contemporary and classic works each season devoted to the portrayal of the African-American experience. It reinterprets Shakespeare, tinkers with the Harlem Renaissance and explores the genre of black musicals. Now the oldest and largest professional African-American theatre in the Southwest, Ensemble first began in 1976 as a touring company that rehearsed in a church basement, a far cry from its current million-dollar, state-of-the-art theater in Midtown.
