The title of this work was taken from a line in the song "Strange Fruit," written by Abel Meeropol as a poem that exposed American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans. The song was made popular by singer Nina Simone, whose music and activism serve as stimulants for this performance. Blood on the Leaves dares audiences to unpack the baggage of silent community in an effort to make this journey less burdened and purposed.
