A beautiful, lonely woman (Madhabi Mukherjee) in 19th century Calcutta drifts into an affair after her husband (Sailen Mukherjee) asks one of his relatives (Soumitra Chatterjee) to keep her company. When tragedy occurs, the husband realizes what is truly lost.

The film is based on a novella by Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941).
