Hyde Park Gallery presents Jim Seigler: My Life With The Circus

eventdetail
Courtesy of the artist

Jim Seigler's early career as a circus set designer has inspired his award-winning mixed-media work. After graduating from The Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, he spent several seasons designing sets, floats and costumes for the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. This experience exposed him to the use of strong color and figure movement — characteristics that are strong influences in his work today.

The art of the circus comes alive in this show that includes Seigler's original sketches from the 1950s and travels into the present day with some wonderful new paintings and sculptures referencing these early sketches.

The opening reception is on May 15, 6:30-9:30 p.m. A screening of The Greatest Show on Earth, Cecil B. DeMille's 1952 circus extravaganza, is scheduled for May 30, 7-10 p.m. The gallery will host an artist talk on June 12, 7-8:30 p.m.

On view through June 21.
