DARKE | gallery sponsors an exhibition at the Galveston Art Center titled Hillerbrand+Magsamen | Home Improvement. Hillerbrand+Magsamen is a collaborative husband-and-wife visual arts team made up of Stephan Hillerbrand and Mary Magsamen. Through photography, video and installation, they navigate between art and cultural geography to explore perceptions of language, identity, media and family within a uniquely American subjectivity.
In Home Improvement, they present two new bodies of work. In the Mandala Series, in an effort to unify home and family, they have created a series of large photographs of Mandalas in which they have organized "stuff" from their home such as Barbies, Legos, books and all those crazy little plastic items into circular patterns. The Covering Series deals with how people experience the absence of family as they grow older. In the Covering photographs, created after the death of a family member, white sheets are used to obscure faces as well as to tie, hold and connect them as a family.
On view through April 20.
