Carl Lewis, Bad Neighbor?

Olympic legend Carl Lewis clashes with his Houston neighbors over his killer dogs

Tyler Rudick
Nov 28, 2013 | 7:04 am

Despite his 10 Olympic medals, a U.N. ambassadorship and his pro bono coaching work for the University of Houston, track star Carl Lewis won't be winning the "neighbor of the year" award at his Memorial Drive apartment building.

John Cannon with the Houston Police Department tells CultureMap that, on Nov. 13, the legendary athlete's two dogs — reported by BARC as a Springer Spaniel and Boxer — chased and killed a Yorkshire Terrier owned by Mary Lane, Lewis' fellow resident at the Memorial Cove Lofts.

Lewis' son, who was watching the two dogs at the time, told his father the incident started when the Yorkie began barking at the Springer Spaniel, which lunged after the small dog. The Boxer quickly joined the fight, killing the Yorkie and biting its owner as she tried to break up the battle.

Lane filed an HPD report the following morning, while BARC's animal control team placed the two dogs under a 10-day rabies quarantine, a standard procedure following any bite case, according to BARC spokesperson Christopher Newport.

Sources close to the Memorial Cove homeowners' association say that, after the attack, a letter was sent to the owner of Lewis' apartment — a corporate aviation service company called Wilson Air Center — requesting that the dogs be removed as per HOA bylaws.

But residents were up in arms this week when they discovered the Springer Spaniel and Boxer had returned to the apartment building. According to BARC, Lewis paid several hundred dollars in boarding and vaccine costs to retrieve the dogs on Monday after city veterinarians deemed them rabies-free.

For the city to continue handling the dispute, complainants will need to file a formal affidavit declaring the animals "dangerous." A hearing would follow, allowing each party to present evidence. If the dogs are determined dangerous, the city either will impose a number of requirements (fence, microchips on the dogs, etc.) on Lewis . . . or euthanize his pets.

Though Wilson Air could not be reached for comment, sources say the company appears to be working with building management to rectify the situation.

2 Houston Astros standouts score prestigious MLB awards

Jeremy Peña has won the Gold Glove.

Tuesday, November 1 wasn't the day that the Houston Astros envisioned, considering the outcome of Game 3 against the Phillies in Philadelphia. However, the team did get some good news the same day.

Rising star shortstop Jeremy Peña and outfielder Kyle Tucker are the Astros 2022 Gold Glove winners, Rawlings announced on a special Rawlings Gold Glove Awards Show on ESPN.

Peña is the first rookie shortstop ever to earn a Gold Glove Award, per Elias Sports Bureau, and also the first Astros rookie at any position to score the prestigious award. Only 11 rookies overall have ever won Gold Gloves, Elias notes. Former Astros shortstops Carlos Correa (2021) and Roger Metzger (1973) have also won.

First-time winner Tucker is the third Astros outfielder to win a Gold Glove. Previously, Michael Bourn won the award back-to-back seasons (2009-10). Iconic Astros outfielder Cesar Cedeno holds the Astros club record with five Gold Glove Awards (1972-76).

Meanwhile, Peña led all American League shortstops in Defensive Runs Saved (15) and Defensive WAR (2.4), per MLB stats. He also ranked tied for third in the American League in Zone Rating (.823). Tucker, a utilitarian star, was a standout defensive presence in 2022, with a top-rated 14 Defensive Runs Saved and eight outfield assists. He was named to his first All-Star team this season.

Game 4 of the World Series is slated for Thursday, November 3.

Houston Astros celebrate 5-year anniversary of first-ever World Series win

George Springer raises the 2017 World Series trophy.

The Houston Astros are spending the fifth anniversary of their first World Series championship doing what else than to win another one.

With Game 3 looking like a certainty to be played on Tuesday, November 1 after a Monday night rainout, the four-time American League pennant winners gave their fans, detractors, and basically any unbiased baseball observer a reminder of the championship moment.

The ball club posted a 13-second video of former Astros pitcher Charlie Morton inducing Los Angeles Dodgers batter Corey Seager into a groundout to José Altuve, representing the final out of Game 7 in LA.

— Houston Astros (@astros) November 1, 2022

Of course, as MLB revealed almost three years later, the championship capped off a year that wasn't entirely played fairly, which is something fans in ballparks that aren't Minute Maid Park have never let the Astros live down to this day.

But, for just that one night on November 1, 2017, the Astros' victory allowed a city that was two months removed from Hurricane Harvey to celebrate that franchise's first championship since entering the majors in 1962.

Bustling Lower Heights mixed-use development adds breakfast, healthy fare, spas, and more

Familiar names are coming to the development.

A Heights-area mixed-use development is expanding with new restaurant and retail tenants. Gulf Coast Commercial Group has signed the new arrivals to the Lower Heights District, the 24-acre, Kroger and Home Depot-anchored development that's located just south of the Heights near the intersection of Studemont and I-10 .

Leading the list is Flat Top Grill, which is scheduled to open in December. Part of the Dallas-based Mongolian Concepts Restaurant Group (Genghis Grill), the restaurant provides diners with the ability to build-their-own meals from more than 80 ingredients, including vegetables, scratch-made sauces, proteins, and spices. The flexible menu caters to those seeking keto, low carb, gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options. Diners can pair their creations with cocktails, beer, or wine.

The development recently welcome the ninth Houston-area location of brunch concept First Watch. Known for signature items like lemon-ricotta pancakes, superfood kale salad, and million dollar bacon, the restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, and lunch daily. An extensive beverage program includes juices, coffee, and cocktails.

Also new to the development is Houston’s first Scissors & Scotch. The men’s grooming concept pairs haircuts and beard trims with a cocktail lounge. Regulars sign up for memberships that bring discounts on services and other perks.

Finally, local favorites Thrive Drip Spa and Salon Lofts will also open new locations at the development. Slated to open in early 2023, Thrive, which offers IV vitamin infusion therapy, will occupy a 2,000-square-foot space. Salon Lofts will occupy more than 5,100-square-feet when it opens in February or March 2023.

“We’re excited to continue expanding the mix of premium dining, retail and service offerings at Lower Heights District, which is ideally positioned to serve businesses and residents in and along the adjacent First Ward Arts District, Washington Corridor and The Heights, which is linked to the project via a hike and bike trail extension,” Gulf Coast vice president of leasing Danny Miller said in a statement.
