    First Look at Hotel Emma

Soon-to-open Hotel Emma in renovated brewery is a great excuse for a San Antonio escape

    Nov 4, 2015 | 9:00 am

Visitors to San Antonio will have a cool new option for accommodations with old-world flair when the Hotel Emma opens in the trendy and historic Pearl Brewery on November 12.

The new hotel, in the renovated 19th-century brewery building, promises a luxurious yet unpretentious stay in one of its 146 rooms. The decor, from the New York-based design team Roman and Williams, is reminiscent of the boutique High Line Hotel in New York City, but with more vintage elements and Texas flair. Plus, the location doesn't get any better, sitting next to Pearl shops, restaurants, and the River Walk.

The locale, courtyard, and chic interior with charming rooms, suites, cellars, and private rooms for entertaining is equally as impressive as the collection of culinary gems Hotel Emma has to offer.

The main event is the hotel restaurant, Supper . Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Supper has a large dining area, patio, and private dining room. The menu — created by Chef John Brand, formerly of The Little Nell in Aspen and San Antonio's La Mansion del Rio and Mokara Hotel and Spa — showcases seasonal and approachable cuisine. Think anchovy beignets, smoked duck chowder, bronzini, roasted root vegetables, and venison loin.

The buck doesn't stop there. Hotel Emma is also unveiling a 19th century-inspired bar, The Sternewirth, boasting classic and creative cocktails, a global wine list, and craft beer. There's also a notable food menu with tasty bites like beef jerky, smoked dates, beef tartare, and venison meatballs.

Need to grab a few goodies and groceries for your San Antonio stay? Larder is Hotel Emma's upscale food store filled with Texas-sourced selections including house-cut meats, prepared goods, wine, beer, and coffee for guests and foodies looking for a taste of luxury.

Rooms start at around $400 a night, with special room rate packages through February 9, 2016.

Bathrooms feature handmade Spanish porcelain tile.

Fredericksburg winery uncorks new ranch-inspired tasting room

Formando Vineyards will open its tasting room on October 1.

A new tasting room is giving Houstonians another reason to take a trip to the Hill Country. Formando Vineyards, a family owned winery shaped by six generations of Texas ranching, will open at 11835 N. State Highway 16 in Fredericksburg on October 1.

Ceci McBride and her nephew, Henry Johnson, founded the brand in 2019, choosing a name that paid homage to the vaquero traditions of the family’s Chaparrosa Ranch. The Spanish “formando” translates to “forming,” and the family likens the winemaking process to the care and patience ranchers use to develop a horse for riding.

All of the label’s fruit, sourced from select Hill Country growers and the family’s estate in Gillespie County, is painstakingly harvested by hand. The family says their goal is to leave the land better than they found it.

"We wanted Formando to feel inseparable from the land and our family's history," Johnson said in a release. "At the same time, we want guests to discover just how expressive and exciting Texas-grown wine can be."

"For six generations, our family has gathered around the land, the table and the traditions of ranch life," McBride added. "Formando is our opportunity to welcome people into that story."

The portfolio includes whites like Picpoul Blanc and Grenache Blanc and reds like Sangiovese and Montepulciano. But the flagship blend is more personal. Harry's Red is named for McBride's late son and “honors the love, connection, and family memories that helped shape Formando.”

Guests can drop in to Formando to order wine by the glass and bites such as house-made focaccia, Texas charcuterie, sandwiches, and pizzas. But for the full experience, the winery recommends a guided tasting. The three options — red-only, mixed wines, and a food pairing — run 60-90 minutes.

The winery also offers the Señor Pico Wine Club, which has three membership tiers with benefits ranging from member discounts and first dibs on new releases to complimentary tastings and exclusive invitations to private events.

Following the debut, Formando’s tasting room will be open Thursday through Sunday, 11 am-5 pm. Reservations can be made online.
