Scales, arpeggios & octaves

Van Cliburn gold medalist whiz kid weighs in on Pussy Riot, Coldplay and music in his head

Joel Luks
Joel Luks
Sep 27, 2013 | 4:30 pm

When one thinks of classical musicians from across the pond, one typically assumes that they come from a musical family whose métier extends back generations. After all, classical music is embedded in the history of so many European countries. It's in their blood — so it seems.

That's not the case for 27-year-old Vadym Kholodenko, the gold medal winner of the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which was held in Fort Worth this summer. The Ukranian-born musician, encouraged by his parents, was enchanted by the art form from an early age. At 13 years old, he was already traveling the world performing solo recitals and headlining with symphony orchestras of repute. Today, Kholodenko lives in Moscow, where he's a student of Vera Gornostaeva at the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

Society for the Performing Arts hosts the pianist for his Houston debut Saturday in a program that includes Mozart's Rondo in D Major, K. 485 and Rondo in A Minor, K. 511; Franz Liszt's Réminiscences de Don Juan (after Mozart); and Sergei Rachmaninov's Études-tableaux, Op. 39.

CultureMap chatted with Kholodenko via email from his abode in Moscow to learn a tad more about what makes this musical genius tick.

CultureMap: To prepare for the Van Cliburn competition, you practiced upward of 10 hours per day. Describe the kinds of things you do to be in tip top shape.

Vadym Kholodenko: It's usual practice time. I prepared as much as I usually do for a season concert. Also, I like to practice in old fashioned style — playing scales, arpeggios, octaves — that sort of thing.

CM: You composed your cadenza for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, which you played at the Cliburn, on the plane en route to Fort Worth. Without being able to sit at the piano, how did you do it? Do you hear music in your head?

VK: This is fun for all musicians. It's very demanding and interesting, though, it's not necessary to sit at the piano to be able to write three minutes of stylized music. I composed in my childhood, but abandoned this a long time ago. I'm not talented in composition, but I do I hear music in my head all the time.

CM: Who gave you your start in music? When did you know you wanted to be a pianist?

VK: My mother brought me to musical school. From the very beginning, I felt that music took a special place in my life. I don't remember the particular time when I realized I wanted to be a pianist because it was so natural for me.

CM: Recently, Russia has been scrutinized for human rights concerns that include gay rights and the treatment of Pussy Riot artists. Recently, Gergiev sided with Putin against the actions of Pussy Riot. What do you think about all this and what's your wish for Russia?

VK: Gergiev has his own point of view. If somebody would like to help gay people or Pussy Riot in Russia, he or she should do something about it. Boisterous Internet discussions about these topics is just useless speculation and shady PR. I wish luck and prosperity for Russia.

CM: Your daughter, Nika, is almost 3 years old. Will you encourage her to play music, perhaps play the piano?

VK: I will try to get her interested in music overall, but I won't try to force it. My parents never forced me to practice, and I am very grateful to them.

CM: When you aren't listening to classical music, what type of music do you enjoy?

VK: I listen to different styles of music. When you are on the road, it's impossible to listen to classical music. Classical music requires special surroundings and circumstances. My favorites bands are Radiohead, Coldplay and System of a Down.

The Society for the Performing Arts presents Vadym Kholodenko in recital on Saturday, 8 p.m., at Wortham Theater Center. Tickets start at $23 and can be purchased online or by calling 713-227-4772.

Kholodenko lives in Moscow, where he's a student of Vera Gornostaeva at the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

Houston Astros reward beloved manager Dusty Baker with new contract

Here's hoping Baker gets another trophy.

With all the frenzied speculation surrounding Houston Astros stars who may or may not return — Trey Mancini and Will Smith are now free agents — fans received some welcome news from the team on Wednesday, November 9.

Beloved manager Dusty Baker will return next year, Astros owner Jim Crane announced on Wednesday. While exact terms weren’t disclosed, Baker’s deal is a one-year contract through the end of the 2023 season, per the team.

“Hey man, we’ve got a chance to win back-to-back and this is what I’d like to do,” Baker said at a news conference on Wednesday, per MLB.com. “I’ve got work to do. You can’t be satisfied on where you are right now or you’ll never get past where you are right now.”

“I love winning more than anything,” he continued. “I’m spoiled by winning. That’s what I plan on doing, doing some more winning.”

Baker has been doing plenty of winning since he joined the Astros. His new deal comes off the Astros’ historic 2022 season, capped by the team’s Game 6 clinching of its second World Series title since 2017. Under Baker’s management, the Astros dominated the American League with a 106-56 record, the second-best in franchise history.

That domination continued throughout the postseason, with a 7-0 sweep in the American League Division Series and American League Championship Series.

As the nation watched, the Astros faced off with the Philadelphia Phillies for the Commissioner’s Trophy, rallying three straight wins, including the 4-1 win in Game 6 to secure the title in front of a raucous Minute Maid Park crowd on Saturday, November 5.

By the numbers, re-signing Baker is a no-brainer; he boasts a combined record of 230-154 (.599) in the regular season over his three seasons with the team, which tops the AL in that span.

A calming presence when he took over the team in 2020, Baker ushered the team to a mere one win away from the World Series. The next season, the Astros scored the AL pennant and headed to the World Series, where they were eventually bested by the Atlanta Braves in six games.

And this year? The run has been nothing short of magical. Baker’s 25th season as a manager saw him become only the 12th — and first African-American — manager in MLB history to win 2,000 games. He also ranks ninth overall in MLB history with his 2,093 career regular season wins.

A playoff powerhouse, Baker has 51 postseason wins, which puts him at No. 4 overall behind Hall of Famers and pro baseball legends Joe Torre, Bobby Cox, and Tony LaRussa.

Exuding been-there-done-that, pro's-pro poise (the former outfielder spent 19 years in the majors and won a World Series in 1981 with the Los Angeles Dodgers), Baker is a true player’s coach who can not only expertly calm the nerves of rookies, but also relate to seasoned and championship-pedigreed veterans. In short, he’s perfect to help lead the Astros into dynasty status.

With a World Series finally under his belt, the charming, patient clubhouse leader and sports icon now lacks only one title: Hall of Famer. Memo to the Baseball Writers' Association of America and Veterans Committee: We’re waiting.

Here's how Houston Astros fans can meet José Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Kyle Tucker this week

Hang with Breggy, Tuve, and Tuck this week.

Houston is still awash in World Series glow after the Astros' magical Game 6 clincher at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, November 5 and the massive victory parade downtown on Monday, November 7. Now fans who can't stop that feeling can get up close and personal with some favorite players.

José Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Kyle Tucker will meet fans and sign autographs this week at three Academy Sports + Outdoors locations around Greater Houston, from Wednesday, November 9 through Thursday, November 10.

For fans, it's chance to score an autograph, perhaps take a photo, shake hands (please mind Bregman's finger), and maybe even snap a selfie with the stars.

Importantly, the three Astros will only sign the autograph cards provided by the stores and will not sign any outside items or merchandise, per an Academy press release. Autograph passes will be handed out to fans one hour prior to each event start time.

Here's the schedule of Astros appearances this week.

Kyle Tucker
Wednesday, November 9; 6 pm-7:30 pm
Academy Sports + Outdoors, Bunker Hill (9734 Katy Fwy.)

Alex Bregman
Thursday, November 10; 6 pm-7:30 pm
Academy Sports + Outdoors, Meyerland, (8715-A W Loop S.)

José Altuve
Thursday, November 10; 7 pm-8:30 pm
Academy Sports + Outdoors, Pasadena (4627 East Sam Houston Pkwy S.)

Much like lines at Academy for team swag, expect extremely long lines at each store. Arrive early, score that signature, and be sure to ask Breggy, Tuve, and Tuck when they plan to get their own custom Johnny Dang grill like their World Series champ teammatesJeremy Peña and Lance McCullers, Jr.

Best of the Wurst

The meatiest tips for the best jaunt through Wurstfest in New Braunfels

Brianna Caleri

If you can't relax with some sausages, when can you relax?

New Braunfels is about a three-hour drive for Houstonians, but fans of German beer and food have a great incentive to go before the event ends on November 13.

Wurstfest is in full swing again in the popular Hill Country town, coming out of its first weekend of 2022 festivities. Admission is free from Monday to Thursday, then $18 online for the weekend.

Although the German food is at least half the draw, Wurstfest could be called Bierfest with the sheer volume of beers it serves. And they’re not expecting too many visitors drinking before business hours end in the rather quaint New Braunfels. So, Wurstfest starts at 5 pm on weekdays, but the five hours it’s open (ending at 10 pm) offer plenty of ways to pass the time.

All weekdays start with live music at 5:30 pm on all five stages across the old German grounds. (For those who haven’t visited, this is basically a theme park: visitors wander through timber framed beer halls, past many, many concession stands, down the Comal River to a fairground, all without stepping out of Germany, it seems.) From those opening sets, there’s near-constant music on three of the stages.

Most of the entertainment comes from live music and the novelty of wandering around among the lederhosen and dirndls. (Those drinking less than friends should strongly consider bringing a book — this is from experience.) But there is some light programming every day to break up the drinking and dancing, especially for visitors with kids.

Wednesday bring smasskrugstemmen (beer holding) contest and a magic show. On Thursday, kids can hear some storytelling, and Friday, Veteran’s Day, honors veterans with a salute. Following crowds will also bring visitors to shopping, sausage-making demonstrations, and children’s fair rides.

Perhaps needless to say, the food is legitimately excellent; this is, at its heart, a culinary event, and serves more than standard fried fair foods. Obviously, sausage is a great choice, but there are potatoes, gravy, pickles, and sauerkraut to go around.

Returning revelers are thrilled to share their best recommendations for the food and imported beers. Pacing yourself, three to five hours is a very reasonable stretch for trying as much as possible and returning to old favorites.

Wurstfest tickets are available now at wurstfest.com, along with more information and entertainment schedules.
