Parking Wars
Houston airport getting a futuristic parking garage The Jetsons would be proud of: Are flying cars finally next?
No aspect of traveling is more frustrating than endlessly circling an airport parking lot when your flight is only minutes away.
Thankfully, William P. Hobby Airport is hoping to alleviate the stress that inevitably comes with airport parking by adding nearly 3,000 much-needed spaces in a brand new garage three times the size of the airport's terminal.
Scheduled to open in late 2015, the garage touts many high-tech features to help drivers find parking as painlessly as possible. A more direct entry system and integrated car counters will let drivers know exactly how many spaces are available in each section. Not only that, but an innovative parking guidance system will show open spaces using single-stall overhead LED indicators in green or red — depending on the availability of the spot — allowing drivers to easily locate parking.
The garage will include environmentally-friendly features like LED lighting which dims as natural light increases.
New vehicular bridges on every level between the new and existing garages will also help reduce the amount of time spent parking and a climate-controlled skybridge will connect the garage to the terminal, helping travelers avoid the elements while crossing between the two.
Additionally, the garage will include environmentally-friendly features like LED lighting which dims as natural light increases and 10 charging spaces for electric vehicles. Bright lighting and blue security call boxes are designed to add to the safety of the garage which will feature two atriums for additional light and abundant landscaping that changes with each season.
Global parking consulting firm Walker Parking Consultants designed the new futuristic garage and will assist in construction management.
