    What's Eric Eating Episode 103

Meet Houston's most smokin' BBQ brothers, plus some Riel food talk

    CultureMap Staff
    Jul 18, 2019 | 1:10 pm

On this week's episode of "What's Eric Eating," Robin Wong, Terry Wong, and pitmaster Quy Hoang join CultureMap food editor Eric Sandler to discuss Blood Bros. BBQ. Since it opened in December, the Bellaire barbecue joint has made a huge splash, thanks to its mixing of classic Central Texas-style barbecue with flavors inspired by various Asian cuisines, including Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai.

The conversation begins with Robin Wong explaining how he and his brother Terry opened Glitter Karaoke in Midtown. Hoang, a friend since childhood, offered to serve steaks at VIP parties. Eventually, Hoang's passion for cooking led him to try barbecue, and Blood Bros. was born.

The restaurant has been featured in the New York Times, named one of the state's 25 best new barbecue joints by Texas Monthly, and won the title of Best New Restaurant in the 2019 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards. Sandler asks what the effect of all that media attention has been.

"It's surreal," Hoang says. "We're very humbled by it."

"Every little thing that comes out, someone will come up to one of us, 'we saw you on TV," because ABC13 did the Localish episode," Robin Wong adds. "[They say] 'I saw you on TV.' Well, we haven't been on TV, but I guess they're airing it all the time."

Prior to the interview, Ryan Lachaine, chef and co-owner of Riel restaurant in Montrose, makes the leap from regular guest to co-host. In the news of the week segment, Lachaine and Sandler discuss Goodnight Hospitality's recent hires for its two August openings, Montrose Cheese and Wine and Rosie Cannonball; Pappas Restaurant's new Shrimp Shack pop-up; and Eater naming Indigo as one of the country's 16 best new restaurants.

In the restaurant of the week segment, the hosts discuss their recent meal at New York Deli & Coffee. The 45-year-old institution recently made a big change, bringing on partner Michael Saghian to modernize and update the diner. Lachaine says they've already changed one of his favorite sandwiches but that he'll remain loyal.

One of Houston’s most acclaimed soul food restaurants has temporarily closed as it prepares to move to a new location. Viola & Agnes’ Neo Soul Cafe’s time in Seabrook has come to an end, but diners can still get their fill of chef-owner Aaron Davis’ cooking.

In a lengthy social media post, Davis explained that the restaurant’s location at 3659 NASA Rd 1 never worked as well as he hoped it would.

“When I moved into that location after the first shift I knew it was too big for what I wanted to do (thats what she said) but I wanted to make it work. I tried for years to speed up service and to keep the maintenance in order but it was way more then I could do alone,” he writes.

Towards that end, Davis has identified a new, still unspecified location for Viola & Agnes’ new home. He’s raised more than $8,500 on GoFundMe to help with expenses associated with the move.

Viola & Agnes moved to its most recent location in 2022. Davis quickly earned raves for his updated take on soul food classics, including a top flight gumbo, expertly fried catfish, and daily specials that could range from oxtails to baby back ribs. The New York Times named it to its 50 best restaurants of 2024 list, and Davis earned a nomination for Chef of the Year in the 2025 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards.

For now, Davis is working at Durb’s Restaurant in League City from 11 am until sold out, Monday through Friday — roughly six miles from Viola & Agnes (109 Meadow Pkwy). Diners can call 281-643-0323 for the day’s menu. Durb’s will maintain its regular hours of being open on Saturday and Sunday.

CultureMap has contacted Davis for more information about Viola & Agnes’ new location. We will update this article when we hear from him.
