Larry Dierker trades baseball for golf at swinging benefit for Literacy Advance
With 1,200 hours as an adult basic education tutor under his belt and serious dollars raised through his annual golf tournament, it was only fitting that Larry Dierkerand his wife, Judy, were in the spotlight when Literacy of Advance of Houston held the 2014 "Reader Cup" fundraiser at TopGolf.
The evening outing where golfers strutted their stuff and newbies picked up a few skills raised $100,000 for literacy programs throughout Houston. And that put a smile on the face of Literacy Advance executive director Melanie Fisk.
Serious golfers entered the friendly competitive play with TopScore and TopShot programs. The event's emcee John Granato, nationally syndicated host of Yahoo! SportsRadio 1560 program “PrimeCut,” captured longest drive honors while Woody Hardy had the highest score. Betty Johnston had the winning team, followed by Stice Consulting and Pinnacle Finance Strategies.
High, low and non-handicappers included Astros president of business operations Reid Ryan and his family, Tony Masraff, Dan Pastorini, Mary and Bill Bracken, Tim Toth and Jane Holston, Kenny Hand, Lara Bell, Jennifer Brown and Autumn and Paul Prestridge.
