    Rodeo Trailblazers

Razzle dazzle rodeo luncheon continues with rocking after-party that just won't stop

We always knew the rodeo folks were a party-loving bunch, even with the serious philanthropic side of their activities. But the recent Trailblazer Awards Luncheon proved without a doubt that these ladies and gents know a thing or two about kicking up the heels of their cowboy boots.

More than 1,160 members of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo leadership, rodeo committee members and social swells turned out at the Bayou City Event Center for a midday bash that included a rocking after-party. Several hundred lingered on site until dark with Tony's catering arm keeping them sated with everything from sliders to duck spring rolls and chips and guacamole.

The luncheon honored five women who have distinguished themselves with their rodeo leadership.

The luncheon honored five women who have distinguished themselves with their rodeo leadership.Taking bows for their commitment to the annual scholarship-generating rodeo were Jill Watson, Cyndy Garza Roberts, Donna Webster, Linda Sue Barnes and Kay Stevens, recipient of the highest honor — the Pearl Award.

The razzle-dazzle luncheon, delish food by Tony's, included a Trailblazer Marketplace where 16 vendors proffered their rodeo-inspired wares, a Saks Fifth Avenue fashion show produced by Lenny Matuszewski and that after-party. Typically reserved for nighttime events, the after-party theme caught on with the rodeo crowd many of whom stayed to play in the party tent, dressed like a chic lounge. Linda McIngvale's A Memorable Event created the tent scene and decorated the events center to a midday hilt.

Heading the luncheon committee were chair Gretchen Gilliam and vice chair Shelly Brock.

Joining the salute to the ladies were HLSR chairman Jack Lyons and wife Nina, Paula and Butch Robinson, Marybeth Burgess, George Lane, Barbara and Don Jordan, Ed McMahon, Anne and Chris Richardson, Maria Bush, Susan Plank, H-E-B's Scott McClelland, Saks Fifth Avenue GM Bobby Dees and Susan Plank.

Brunch, but make it haute couture. That was the vibe as Houston’s chicest do-gooders gathered for the Sunshine Kids Foundation’s 10th Annual “Ladies Who Brunch” at The Post Oak Hotel. Chaired by Alex Joven and Peyton Wallace, the affair unfolded with champagne, laughter, and a shared commitment to helping children with cancer shine a little brighter.

The lively event raised $1.7 million.

Returning favorite artist Tyler Kay splashed the scene with live paintings — her fourth year turning canvases into conversation starters. Meanwhile, the silent auction drew plenty of oohs and ahhs with nearly 100 luxe packages, including a private Dior shopping spree, a wine-soaked escape to Napa’s Stanly Ranch, and a private jet getaway to the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles.

Guests arrived dressed to impress in spring-ready ensembles as the ballroom shimmered in gold — a fitting nod to the milestone anniversary. The decor set the stage for a fashion show co-sponsored by Alchemia and Modern Marla, where the real showstoppers were the Sunshine Kids Cancer Warriors. Walking alongside professional models, they owned the runway with heart, confidence, and smiles.

Dr. Maggie Cupit-Link shared heartfelt remarks that brought the room back to the day’s deeper purpose. Brittany Hebert Franklin, CEO and founder of Sky High for Kids, kept the energy high as auctioneer, inspiring bids on standout items like a framed artwork by Cancer Warrior Faith, dinner with Roberto Coin in New York City, a yellow diamond drop necklace from Shaftel Diamonds, and even an adorable mini goldendoodle.

With the help of more than 650 guests, the event raised $1.7 million to fuel the foundation’s life-changing work. The funds will fulfill pledges to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital.

On the scene were Danielle Dubois, Abbie Byrom-Botello, Kristen Cannon, Logan Lester-Tafelski, Laura Goodson, Danny and Iris Shaftel, Kat Pressly, Jessica Morrison, Liz Grayson Landry, Dr. Makenzi Dooley, Dr. Kriti Mohan, and Sterling Dio.
