If there's anything the art world loves, it's overanalysis. So even though Art Basel Miami Beach ended more than a week ago, that doesn't mean it's too late to take stock and document my experience navigating the booths and sand dunes.
And what better way to discuss the art and party studded weekend than through a few top sultry sound bites?
1. Husband: "I like this painting."
Wife: "No, no — we already have a Rauschenberg"
(Overheard at Galerie Hans Mayer, collectors' preview)
2. "You know, wear what the art scene wears . . . black. But definitely not black."
(Jenny Antill, photographer)
3. "Right now I'm spending most of my time freelancing and freebasing."
(Danny Kopel, New York-based editor and spinning instructor)
4. "I have a cigarette and I'm not afraid to use it as a weapon."
(Woman with a heavy New Jersey accent, exiting Interview/P.S. 1 party at Delano Hotel)
5. "Have you heard of this band? Are you with the band? Do you know where I can get coke?"
(Unidentified audience member at Metric performance)
6. "Art is so boring, can we just go get cocktails at the Standard?"
(Overheard at Gagosian Gallery)
7. "The recession was so much better; everyone was so thin."
(Overheard at Soho Beach House)
8. "I used to stay at the Sheraton. Don't tell anyone."
(Anonymous Houston artist)
9. "We have a clothing optional house. And lots of bathtub parties"
(Couchsurfing hosts ... I switched to a hotel.)
10. "So where is the art?"
(Yankees star Alex Rodriguez walking down Collins Avenue)
