Robert Redford's Sundance Cinema confirmed for November opening at former Angelika site

As first reported by CultureMap in February, Sundance Cinema is coming to Bayou Place.

Mayor Annise Parker and David Cordish, chairman of the Cordish Companies, have confirmed that the small movie theater company affiliated with Robert Redford's Sundance Institute will open on Nov. 1 in the space formerly leased to the Angelika Film Center.

Renovation of the 36,000-sq.-ft. space, which had deteriorated over the years, is estimated to cost $2.25 million. The new theater will offer drinking and dining options, digital stereo sound, and, interestingly, all reserved seating. Moviegoers can expect a marquee of films selected from festivals alongside judiciously chosen general release movies. Exclusive filmmaker screening events will also elevate the cinema's calendar.

"I am so happy to see our newest Sundance Cinemas facility coming to Houston. It's a great city for our next step forward," Redford said in a statement.

Sundance's arrival underscores the revival of Bayou Place as it adds a second-story nightlife sector of five bars and clubs, one of which, Professional Bull Riders, opened last week. The restoration of a downtown movie theater may also provide a strong central venue for this year's Cinema Arts Festival.
