Fashion trendcasters chose tangerine as the color of the year, but on Friday health-minded women will be wearing red, and lots of it. The hue signifies the importance of heart health and with the American Heart Association taking the lead, choosing to wear red means special perks and raising awareness of heart disease.

Heart disease is often described as a silent killer among women, taking the lives of more women that all forms of cancer combined. The American Heart Association's annual Go Red for Women campaign aims to shatter the secrecy and gets women talking in fun and compelling ways about how to combat the disease.

Friday marks the Ninth annual National Wear Red Day and organizations across the city are getting in the spirit. Through Sunday, shoppers wearing red receive a special 20 percent discount on a wide assortment of merchandise at Macy’s stores.

The AHA headquarters, Houston City Hall and Williams Tower will all be topped with red lights Friday.

Exercise is an important part of heart health and Ice at The Galleria will not only be adorned with the Go Red for Women logo, but also skaters wearing red will receive a free ice skate rental from 10 a.m. -10- p.m. Friday. All Houston-area YMCAs are inviting non-member to wear red and work out for free Friday.
