You don't have to hop on an airplane for a quick summer getaway. On this morning's Great Day Houston, CultureMap editor Joel Luks joined host Deborah Duncan to talk about some great day trips that are a tank of gas or less from Houston. Among the places they scouted out were:
- Needville (45-minute drive from downtown Houston) — Brazos Bend State Park and the George Observatory
- Anahuac (54-minute drive) — Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge and lots of gators (they outnumber residents 3:1)
- Bragg Station (90-minute drive) — The Ghost Road, where the ghost light is sometimes seen
- Orange (2-hour drive) — Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, Stark Museum of Art, Piney Woods Winery
- Shiner (2-hour drive) — Home of the famous Shiner Brewery
