UPDATE 04/06: DJ Yamaho had to cancel her appearance because of a family medical emergency and has been replaced by DJ Whitney Fierce, who is currently touring in Mexico but will fly to Houston for the Encore party.
Houston Grand Opera Ball Encore after party chairs Carrie and Sverre Brandsberg-Dahl are pulling out all the stops for the late-night event on April 8. They are bringing in a DJ from Iceland to add a little sizzle to the party, which follows the “Carnevale di Venezia” gala and is aimed at attracting a hip young professional crowd.
Born in Chicago, DJ Yamaho grew in Reykjavík and at 19, became the island nation's first female DJ in a competitive scene dominated by men. She landed a residency at the legendary Reykjavík club, Sírkús, which introduced such popular acts as The Sugarcubes and Björk, and has headlined at such hot clubs as Space (Ibiza), Panorama Bar at Berghain (Berlin), Kulturbox (Copenhagen) and Razzmatazz (Barcelona).
Her mixing style is eclectic, ranging from disco to pumping techno, tech-house to her own brew, blending in fresh tunes with classic tracks to keep the dance floor in a high-energy spirit.
Yamaho appeared in Of Monsters And Men's music video for their song, “Hunger," which has received more than 5 million views on YouTube and attracted Carrie's attention. "I fell in love with her sound when I saw she did this music video with one of my favorite bands," Carrie explains.
Also since hubby Sverre is Scandinavian, it seemed perfect to tap into a Nordic theme for the Houston Grand Opera Ball after party. "Houston’s international flair mixed with Sverre’s Nordic roots made us want to bring in a whole new sound for the Houston Grand Opera Ball after party Encore," Carrie says. "We want to keep it interesting and unexpected. With the masked theme Carnevale di Venezia we want to create a party that’s unforgettable, bringing in energy like we’re all playing a part in a decadent, outlandish, Italian art drama."
The Encore after party will take place from Saturday (April 8) from 10 pm - 1:30 am at the Wortham Theater Center Grand Foyer, 500 Texas Avenue. Tuxedos and long gowns are required. In addition to DJ Yamaho's music and dancing, the party will feature drinks, Italian cuisine, and a silent auction,
Tickets for the after party are $150 each and must be purchased by Thursday (April 6). For more information visit the Houston Grand Opera website.
