While detractors sometimes sniff at Houston's society scene, CultureMap editor-at-large Shelby Hodge and Great Day Houston host Deborah Duncan point out that millions of dollars are raised for the city's charities every year.

"It is the fabric of the city. Philanthropy is the underlying goal of it all," Hodge told Duncan in a segment on the Channel 11 morning show Thursday. "This community is so generous, giving millions of dollars every year to nonprofits. Without 'society,' it would be a very sad city.' "

As the fall social whirl gets ready to rev up in September, Hodge and Duncan looked back at a gala that raked in $32 million in one night and discussed how, in addition to raising money for charities, the social scene aids the economy and makes Houston a more interesting place to live.
