Opting not to stray far from message during its annual gala, the Houston Area Women's Center featured not only the sounds of Tony winner Christine Ebersole but also a compelling story of domestic violence as told by a survivor.
After sharing her harrowing story, Laura White received a standing ovation in the Omni Houston Hotel ballroom from the generous crowd that raised $760,000. More than $65,000 of that came during a mission-driven paddles up appeal. Proceeds will aid victims of domestic and sexual violence through HAWC programs.
Betty and Stephen Newton and Kathy and John Orton chaired the evening that featured Ebersole in a dinner show offering of inspired singing that was in keeping with the evening's theme, "A Night at the Cabaret."
The benefit honored author and Houston's former first lady Andrea White, a long-time and hands-on supporter of HAWC, and Memorial-Hermann Health System which has partnered with the non-profit since 1985.
The support group on hand included Arvia and Jason Few, Carole Groppe, Cynthia and Robert Creager, Susan Bickley and Robert Scott, Marie Bosarge, Janet Gurwitch and Ron Franklin, Jenny Elkins, Melinda Snell and David Elder, Anita and Gerald Smith, Naomi Warren and Cynthia and Tony Petrello.
