Lucky Burger, the barrel-shaped emporium of classic diner burgers and chocolate milkshakes, will close this Saturday. It joins gay dive bar EJ’s, which is set to shutter at the end of June, as another sign that old Montrose is slipping away.

An employee at the restaurant tells CultureMap that the landlord’s price demands for a lease renewal were too high, prompting the decision.

Lucky Burger has a 40 year history, but the current owners have been in place for 15 years. Rather than find a new location, they simply plan to retire. The employee says prospects in Montrose for a space that’s sufficiently inexpensive to support a $5 cheeseburger are simply too dim.

The landlord’s price demands for a lease renewal were too high, prompting the decision.

In the meantime, all of the restaurants furnishings are for sale. Those seeking a red-checked tablecloth for their memories should inquire at Lucky Burger.

As word of the closing first spread via Twitter (and Swamplot), a steady stream of customers came through for a late lunch.

Despite the vague air of sadness, everyone looked happy with their choices. Such is the nature of change in Montrose.
