Grocery Wars

A major Houston grocery store is closing as trendier options crop up all around it

A major Houston grocery store is closing as trendier options emerge

Memorial-area residents are about to have one less grocery store option, with word that the Randalls Flagship store on South Voss will soon close its doors.

Swamplot first reported the news based on reader rumors, which were verified when Safeway president Paul McTavish told the Chronicle that the closure was a result of "an expired lease and an unsuccessful effort to reach landlord agreement on a new store."

Employees, he said, will be offered positions at other nearby Randalls stores. A closing date has not been revealed.

One might wonder if the grocery market is oversaturated in that area — with a new Trader Joe's across the street and Kroger Signature, Whole Foods and H-E-B all nearby — but some speculate that the defunct Randalls could be replaced by yet another foodstuff store.
