Look out below! 3400 Montrose is coming down in a shower of rubble

Driving down Montrose in recent days has been a harrowing experience for those passing by 3400 Montrose. As demolition of the 10-story building nears conclusion, the dust and rocks have been flying. But no damage to cars, at least not that we have heard.

Onlookers perch at Starbucks across the street for a front-row view of the proceedings as CultureMap did on Friday when this photo was snapped. The parking lot at Hawthorne and Montrose had a steady flow of gawkers all lifting their cell phones to snap images of the crumbling building. By Saturday night, the last remains of the building were in a heap of rubble.

Built in 1953, the stone clad structure is being replaced by a 30-story apartment tower. Long-time residents will remember 3400 Montrose as the site of popular late-night spot Cody's followed by Scott Gertner's Skybar which provided live music on the 10th floor space for many years.
