Informally heralded as the Whole Foods for animals, Kriser's all-natural pet store is arriving in Houston after earning hordes of devotees in Southern California, Colorado and Chicago.

In advance of its official Feb. 8 opening on Buffalo Speedway in West University, the store will unleash its trademark Poo Fairies starting Saturday (Feb. 1) .

Confused yet? Kriser's president and chief operating officer Ken Grouf explains.

"Poo Fairies are this fun way to connect with a community when we launch a new store," he tells CultureMap.

"Just go to a Houston dog park and you can see just how sincerely excited people are  to be with their pets."

"Picture these people wearing Kriser's official Poo Fairy suits at a local park. Every time a Poo Fairy spots someone clearing up after their dog, that pet parent get an 'I Scooped' sticker similar to the 'I Voted' stickers you get on Election Day." Free poo bags and coupons are passed along for good measure as well.

Look for Poo Fairies at dog-friendly locations across Houston, including Discovery Green, Memorial Park and the Danny Jackson Family Bark Park.

While Grouf remains keenly aware of the Poo Fairies' promotional value, he stresses that these roving squads help to maintain city-wide pet relations.

"Let's be honest, people get upset and sad when they step in poo. Our teams offer us an opportunity to make areas poo-free and ensure that the animals we love so much never get a bad wrap."

Kriser's explored markets across the country before committing to Space City, a major urban area where "pets are accepted as part of the community," Grouf says.

"Just go to a Houston dog park and you can see just how sincerely excited people are to be with their pets," he laughs, adding that it was places like the Boneyard — everyone's favorite combination dog park and bar — that lured company execs to the city.

Located Westpark and Buffalo Speedway in the Kroger shopping center, Kriser's willl make its Texas debut with a grand opening weekend on Feb. 8 and 9. Click here for more details.
